Ensz & Sons Gutters | Serving Mississippi Since 1991
It Started With Family
There’s a lot of history behind the name Ensz and Sons, and we think it’s worth telling.
My roots are about as mixed as they come. My mother is from California, my dad from Kansas, I was born in Kansas myself, and I’m married to a Canadian. We’ve got five wonderful children, two of whom work in the business with me today. But despite all that, I’ve called Mississippi home since I was two years old, which I reckon makes me Mississippi through and through.
The story really starts with my dad’s older brother. In a family of eleven kids out of Kansas, he learned carpentry around the age of fifteen or sixteen, and he passed that trade down to my dad. My dad and his brother eventually built houses together and even developed their own subdivision in Kansas.
But in the late 1970s, my dad decided he wanted a different kind of life. He bought a farm in Mississippi and moved the family down when I was two.
Farming in Mississippi in the 1980s was hard going, and by around 1988 to 1990, he ended up returning the farm to the bank. So he went back to what he knew: carpentry. He started out working for others and before long had built his own construction business, taking on houses, remodels, and all kinds of work with his own crews.
We are part of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite, and we don’t pursue higher education, so when I finished school at fifteen, I went straight to work with my dad. At that point, he had one clear goal: stop relying on subcontractors and bring everything in-house.
So we made a decision to focus on vinyl and aluminum siding. I still have a picture of a house we did in 1991, and remarkably, in 2026, it still looks great.
How We Got Here
From 1991 to around 1998, I worked alongside my dad doing siding. Then one day he said, “One of us ought to buy a gutter machine.”
I wasn’t so sure I wanted to, but he said if I didn’t, he would, so I went ahead and bought myself an old bread truck, put a gutter machine in it, and started hanging gutters on Saturdays, evenings, and weekends.
Then in 2001, I went to Canada and married my wife. Between the wedding and the paperwork, it took about three months to get back home. While I was gone, my dad had been lining up gutter jobs for me, and when I finally got back, I quit working for him and went full-time into gutters.
Getting married and starting a business all at once was a serious commitment, but I stuck it out, and it worked.
From 2001 through about 2018, it was mostly just me, usually with one or two guys helping out, and eventually a lady who came in one day a week to handle the bookkeeping and office work.
We didn’t advertise much. Nearly all of our work came from word of mouth and repeat customers. Looking back, that’s still true today. About 80% of our business comes from referrals or returning customers. We’re proud of that.
From One Man to a Team
In 2018, my wife wanted to move to Colorado, and that’s when it hit me: the business was me. If I left, it would die.
I knew then that I needed to build something real. A business that could run without me at the center of it.
That turned out to be harder than I expected, but we’ve been working at it ever since.
As of 2026, we have nine installers, two salesmen, and two full-time ladies in the office. We’ve grown into a real team.
In 2025, I purchased my father’s old siding business. He had decided around 2015 that he’d retire when he turned 70, and he sold the business to one of his longtime employees, who ran it for ten years.
When I bought it back last year, my dad asked if he could come work for me. So now he’s back part-time, training our new siding crews right alongside my two sons.
It really has become Ensz and Sons.
